“It’s just that I feel so small and useless,” Esmeralda sniffled, her points drooping even further. “I’m no spark of use to anybody. Even if I disappeared forever, no one would miss me. “She threw out her tips, “Just take a look around you; there are so many stars about, all blazing more brightly and brilliantly than me. And I’m just a tiny speck of fluff. My tips are too short and too blunt, and my light is too dull and too green. It’s all so pointless! I’m a waste of space as a star!” she wailed “I’d rather just fade away”. A glittering tear ran from her green and gold eye, and lost itself among the folds of Uncle Spreading Sky’s cloak.

“Come here, my darling”, said Mother Sunshine. She spread out her veiled rays to embrace her, and Esmeralda climbed dejectedly into her lap with a sigh. She hugged the sad little star tightly and whispered in her ear.
